Ivan Rangel Neto, widely recognized as Bubuska Valença, is a Brazilian singer, instrumentalist, composer, and actor known for his significant contributions to Brazilian popular music (MPB).
Born into an artistic family, he is the son of poet Luciano Pontual Rangel do Rego Barros and writer Maria da Paz Valença Rangel, affectionately known as Pazita Valença. He began learning guitar at an early age, and soon after, he ventured into composing, leading to his songs being recorded by prominent figures in MPB. Notably, in 1976, his composition "Festa da Apartação" was recorded by Banda de Pau e Corda, followed by "Marca Ferrada," which was recorded by Paulo Diniz in 1978, a collaboration with his mother, Pazita Valença.
Bubuska gained recognition during the pivotal MPB festivals of the late 1970s and early 1980s and became an influential figure in the Pernambuco carnival, notably with his electric sailboat on the Capibaribe River. His debut solo album, "Um Deus Vagabundo," marked the beginning of his solo career.
In 1978, he was featured on two tracks of the LP "Primeira Cantoria da Músicas Nordestinas," which showcased the top songs from the Regional Festival organized by TV Globo in Recife. His entries, "Sertão, Pedra, Pau e Poeira" and "Se Oriente, Moço" (the latter co-written with Pazita Valença), positioned him among the leading contenders. He then traveled to Rio de Janeiro to participate in two TV Globo music programs, "Sexta Super" and "Brasil Pandeiro," where he received offers from RCA and WEA, which he declined, preferring to seek longer-term prospects. Between 1978 and 1979, he took a theater course at the Liceu de Artes e Ofícios under Professor Luís Carvalheira, and from 1979 to 1984, he performed in the popular production "The Passion of Christ of Nova Jerusalém."
At the First Popular Music Festival of the Northeast, Bubuska secured third place with his song "Lost Like a Blind Man in the Middle of a Shootout," earning the Best Performer award that year. He participated in various festivals, garnering multiple accolades, including at the "It's Time to Sing" Festival of Rede Tupi Television in São Paulo in 1979, where he won in the Best Lyrics category for "I Want to Be There," leading to a contract with Polygram in 1980. In that same year, Maricenne Costa recorded "Quantas e Quantos," a song he co-wrote with Antônio Adolfo, and Fafá de Belém recorded "Cabresto" and "Baque do Coração," both in collaboration with Vevé Calazans.
Throughout the following years, numerous artists recorded his compositions, including Jessé, who recorded "Rosas de Maio" in 1983, and Tânia Alves, who recorded "Cadê Nós" the next year. His cousin, Alceu Valença, also recorded "A menina dos meus olhos" in 1984, while Baby Consuelo recorded "Desejo Colorido" in 1985, and Alceu Valença released "Mar de amor menina" in 1986.
Bubuska Valença has consistently focused on creating soundtracks and jingles, infusing them with his vibrant personality and creative spirit. This artistic versatility has allowed him to explore various ideas and projects beyond music. For instance, he crafted a giant puppet named "Bubuskão" to play and promote his songs throughout the city and performed on a mobile stage, known as "Asas da América" (Wings of America), alongside his cousins Marcos and Marcelo Valença. Recognizing the need for effective communication to promote his work, he developed "Rádio Buska," converting a buggy into a mini mobile stage to share his music beyond his hometown.
In 1990, during a trip to Venice, Italy, while playing guitar on a gondola, Bubuska conceived the idea of creating a musical boat. Upon returning to Recife, he realized this vision by constructing the "Águas da Boa Viagem" Aquatic Electric Trio, the only known aquatic electric trio, which serves as a floating stage for his performances at the beach, merging his passions for the sea and music. Completed in 1993, this unique vessel has participated in various events and environmental initiatives, including Curta o Capibaribe, Bloco Aquático Galinha d´Água, Carnival on the Capibaribe River, and the Clean Beach Project, where he performed music while promoting awareness of beach maintenance.
