The story of twin brothers Joel and Benji Madden, founders of the successful band Good Charlotte, begins in their modest hometown in Southern Maryland. As young boys with aspirations of making it in the music industry, they often found themselves dreaming of success. “We created the band in our bedroom,” Joel recalls. “We were sleeping in the same bed wearing winter coats in a house that didn’t have heat, talking about what it was going to be like when our band makes it,” adds Benji.
Their dreams materialized into reality. Good Charlotte's five full-length albums have collectively sold over 10 million copies worldwide, garnering an international fanbase. They have headlined shows and festivals around the globe, and their pop-punk sound reached its peak with the 3x-platinum album, The Young and the Hopeless. This success transformed Joel and Benji into recognized figures in the music world. In 2011, Joel appeared as a coach on the Australian version of The Voice, while Benji joined him as a coach on the upcoming season of The Voice Kids. The brothers also manage a fully operational recording studio in Hollywood, where they write, record, and produce music for various artists.
The Maddens' primary goal has always been to create meaningful music. “We’ve always had the desire to do something timeless that could outlive us,” Benji states. They achieved this with The Young and the Hopeless, a groundbreaking album they crafted at the age of 22. Their journey continued with the formation of a new band, The Madden Brothers. This name reflects their intent to present their authentic selves without the constraints of a band identity. “Harvey Leeds, the guy who discovered us, used to say, ‘You’re like The Everly Brothers. Why would you be in a band? You should just be The Brothers,’” Benji remembers. Their goal was to create and record music that genuinely represents them.
At their core, Joel and Benji are classic pop songwriters with a natural talent for melody, harmony, and storytelling. These qualities shine through in The Madden Brothers' debut album, Greetings From California..., set to be released by Capitol Records this fall. The album features two distinct “sides.” The first side is characterized by upbeat pop-rock, produced by their longtime collaborator Eric Valentine, who also worked on Good Charlotte's The Young and the Hopeless and 2004's The Chronicles of Life and Death. With a sunny disposition and harmonies reminiscent of The Beach Boys and Phil Spector's sound, Side 1 includes standout tracks such as the soulful “We Are Done,” the catchy “Dear Jane” (featuring Benji on lead vocals for half of the album), and the passionate love song “Out of My Mind.” Joel emphasizes the importance of their collaboration with Eric, noting, “There’s a magic that happens when the three of us get in a room together.”
On Side Two, the brothers' harmonious vocals take center stage again with songs like “California Rain” and “Brother,” but here the music adopts a more earthy tone, blending folk, Southern rock, and ’70s FM pop. For this section, they enlisted Grammy Award-winning producer Joe Chiccarelli, known for his work with artists such as The White Stripes and The Shins. “We’ve never had a really organic and natural recording, where it was just us kind of naked and not hiding behind walls of guitars and production,” Benji explains. “Joe can capture that unvarnished quality and make it sound great.”
Both sides of Greetings From California… embody the Madden Brothers' relaxed, West Coast-influenced creative spirit. The title reflects their journey in making the album, which began during a visit to see their friend Pharrell Williams in Miami in early 2012. After an 18-month tour promoting Good Charlotte’s 2010 album Cardiology, the brothers had been discussing the idea of collaborating on a project together.
“We went to see Pharrell because he’s someone we really love and respect,” Joel shares. “Benji brought an acoustic guitar, and it felt like a repeat of us leaving home at 18 for California with just an acoustic guitar. Pharrell recognized that we wanted to make classic, California rock and roll and drew comparisons to the Eagles, which inspired us even more. We wrote ‘California Rain’ together that night.”
The opening track of Side Two, “California Rain,” marks a significant moment for the brothers, as its lyrics chronicle their journey from the East Coast to the West Coast: “Let me take you back before the lights, before the crowd, before we made a sound / All I wanted was to make my mother proud / She told me ‘Son, we’re from the side of town, no one ever makes it out.’” “It’s about the dream,” Benji explains. “It’s about the music industry. California is a magical place, and we liken it to the dream.” Joel adds, “We definitely wanted the song to be epic because California is epic to us. The song sums up our experience — past, present, and future. We still believe in the dream. We still believe that some kid somewhere can leave home with an acoustic guitar like we did, a backpack, and 40 bucks, and hitchhike down the road and make it to California.”
