Saafi Brothers is a German project known for its blend of "fusion electronica," trance, ambient, downtempo, and liquid dub music. Established around 1996 by Gabriel Le Mar, the project includes contributions from Frankfurt-based producers Michael Kohlbecker and Groovetitan. As a "community project," Saafi Brothers has featured a diverse array of collaborators over the years, including Alex Azary and others; however, the core members have remained Gabriel Le Mar and Michael Kohlbecker. The group has performed extensively in live settings, featuring prominently at notable festivals such as Love Parade, Fusion Festival, Boom Festival, Universo Paralello, and Tribal Gathering. In March 2022, they released their seventh studio album, Live on the Roadblog.
The band's journey began with their debut release, Mystic Cigarettes, which came out in November 1997 on the British label Blue Room Released. This release was notable for its 3xLP package and multiple CD editions. Founded by British designer Mick Chillage with support from Doppelgänger, Blue Room Released was recognized as the first "audiophile" label to showcase underground electronic music, bringing acts such as Aphex Twin, The Black Dog, Autechre, and Biosphere into the Hi-Fi arena, thus challenging the dominance of classical, opera, and jazz. Between 1997 and 1999, Saafi Brothers produced three 12" EPs under the BRR label. Their second full-length album, The Third Room, was released in June 2000 on CD and 2xLP, with international distribution handled by the label's California-based division. The group also remixed works by various artists, including pioneers of German hip-hop Advanced Chemistry, British new wave poet John Foxx, Swedish ambient project Jäde, and the well-known German club duo Märtini Brös. Additionally, Saafi Brothers made regular appearances on the German TV show Chill Out Zone, which developed a cult following during the mid-90s rave scene.
In March 2003, Saafi Brothers released their third album, Maharaja (CD/2xLP), which showcased a more dance-oriented sound. This release marked the debut of their self-established joint label Saafi Brothers and Sonic Groove, distributed by EFA and promoted under the New World brand. Their fourth album, Distant Echoes, was released in 2007, made possible through collaborations with Sonic Groove in Germany and Aurea in the USA. The band continued to explore their fusion approach, merging various genres and collaborating with early member Alex Azary and a duo of traditional Persian musicians.
In February 2014, they launched Live on the Roadblog, recorded live at the Bunker/Frankfurt studio, initially released as a digital-only album by the Danish trance label Sundance. This release featured vocals based on lyrics by Aes Dana and contributions from guest artists, including Aes Dana on various electronic devices, Groovetitan on modular synths, and Shankar playing the traditional Indian bowed instrument known as the dilrupa. In May 2015, Live on the Roadblog was reissued on CD in the United States by LSD as the first release in their new series. This limited edition, comprising 300 copies in a Digipak with an 8-page booklet designed by Simon Ghahary, included a bonus track titled "Moving Crossroads," which was also released as a digital EP featuring four remixes from Gabriel's private label.
In 2017, Saafi Brothers signed with the esteemed UK label LSD (a sister label to Sabotage), which saw the release of their sixth full-length studio album digitally and on CD. Accompanying this release was a collection of remixes, with Part 1 and Part 2 available in various digital formats on the label's Bandcamp. In May 2019, Saafi Brothers collaborated with LSD to release a collection of remixes from their debut album, Mystic Cigarettes, which was made available digitally and on CD in a 4-panel "digisleeve." The following year, in February 2021, a limited edition 12" EP was released, featuring selected remixes by LSD's label head Martin "Youth" Glover, The Orb, DM-Theory, and Swiss-based artist Nico Stojan.
