Bles Bridges, born on July 22, 1947, in Viljoensdrif, Free State, was a notable South African singer. His stage name, Bles Bridges, originated from his Irish grandfather, who affectionately referred to him as "Bles," a term meaning "bald" in Afrikaans, due to his sparse hair since childhood.

Bridges launched his music career with the release of his debut album, "Onbekende Weermagman" ("Unknown Soldier"), in 1982. His professional journey truly began in 1984 with the arrival of his second album, simply titled "Bles," which achieved gold status in less than a month, selling 25,000 copies and featuring "Maggie," one of his most recognized tracks. By the time his third album was issued, sales of the second had doubled. He soon established a pattern of alternating between Afrikaans and English albums, gaining significant acclaim in the process. Additionally, he collaborated with Eurovision South Africa.

Bridges' most significant hit came in 1986 with the release of "Ruiter van die Windjie" ("Rider of the Wind"). His wife, Leonie, played a crucial role in his career as his sound engineer and was the composer or co-writer of many of his songs, including his well-known hits like "Maggie" and "I am the Eagle, you're the Wind." A charming aspect of his performances was his tradition of handing out roses to female audience members in the front rows.

A career highlight for Bridges occurred when he performed at the sold-out Superbowl at Sun City, five times over one weekend, making him the first and only artist to do so on May 14 and 15, 1987. Remarkably, he attracted a larger audience than Frank Sinatra did during the Super Bowl opening in 1982. After overcoming cancer in the 1980s, he became a generous supporter of cancer research charities. He also held a concert in the 1980s to benefit the Volkshulpskema (People's Help Scheme) of the Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging, a far-right paramilitary organization, which raised R10,000.

In 2000, Bridges began recording a new album with friends from the music industry. The first track, a duet with Patricia Lewis titled "The First Kiss Goodnight," written by Dennis East, was recorded on March 21, 2000, shortly before his untimely passing.

Bles Bridges died in a motor vehicle accident on March 24, 2000, leaving behind his wife, Leonie, and their children, Sunette and Victor. His funeral attracted over 15,000 mourners, and at the time of his death, he had sold more than 2.5 million albums, encompassing both records and CDs.
