Sean Bowley

Sean Bowley is a Melbourne-based singer-songwriter and guitarist from Australia. In 1988, he co-founded the Darkwave band EDEN alongside multi-instrumentalist Pieter Bourke. Between 1990 and 1997, EDEN released six albums, including EPs, gaining international recognition. The band reunited in 2015, launching their LP ‘The Edge of Winter’ in June 2017, followed by the release of 'East of The Stars' to support a European tour scheduled for June 2020.

History – The Early Days and All Things Unseen Born in Bairnsdale, Victoria, and raised in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Bowley was heavily influenced by the underground music scene of the 1960s. He began writing music at the age of fifteen and immersed himself in Melbourne’s alternative music culture during his teenage years, drawing inspiration from bands like Joy Division, The Birthday Party, and particularly Rowland S. Howard. In 1981, he formed his first ethereal guitar band, ‘All Things Unseen,’ which performed at various alternative venues, including The Seaview Ballroom, The Tote, The Stockade Hotel, and the Central Club. The band supported notable local acts such as The Corpse Grinders, Safehouse, and Red Blue Yellow before disbanding in 1987. The lineup included Sean Bowley on vocals and guitars, Carl Carter on bass, William Carter on keyboards, and Ingo Wieben on drums.

EDEN EDEN was formed in 1988, with Bowley, Bourke, and bassist Ross Healy. The band made their debut performance at the Baden Powell Hotel in Prahran and quickly garnered a local following within Melbourne's alternative music scene.

Their first 12-inch EP, ‘The Light Between Worlds,’ was released in 1990 on Nightshift Records in Scotland. The EP attracted the attention of BBC Radio's John Peel, who featured tracks on his show, leading to significant support from The Alternative Press Magazine in the USA. That same year, a 7” single titled ‘Searching for Angel’s Hands’ was released by Ultimate Records Australia, further expanding their audience through a live appearance on Australia’s national music TV series Countdown Revolution.

In 1991, EDEN signed with the London-based label Third Mind Records, which helped elevate the band’s profile in Europe and the USA. Their first full-length album, ‘Gateway to the Mysteries,’ was released in 1992 (in Australia under Elysium/Shock Records) and received acclaim from music critics, who noted its resemblance to the sound of the Cocteau Twins as if they had existed in the 1890s. Although a second LP titled ‘Wearyall’ was recorded under Third Mind, it has never been released. In 1993, EDEN joined Projekt Records in the USA, releasing the ‘Healingbow’ mini-album.

Following a lineup change in 1993, which saw Bourke leave the band, Bowley was joined by drummer Peter Barrett, keyboardist Paul Machlis, guitarist Tracy Ellerton, and bassist Ewan McArthur. Under this new configuration, EDEN released their second studio album, ‘Fire and Rain,’ in 1994 through the Projekt label. Allmusic's Ned Raggett praised the new lineup's sound as "an intriguing sonic palette," which extended the goth and psych tendencies of Bowley's music. The album showcased EDEN’s unique sound, characterized by Legends Magazine as ‘dark and richly atmospheric,’ indicating their mastery over various styles within the Gothic genre. In the same year, they released ‘Earthbound,’ an LP of remixes and rarities on Viridian Records in Melbourne. In 1996, EDEN recorded the ‘Midnight Sun’ LP, which remains unreleased. The lineup also saw the addition of bassist Stephen Wattie for the ‘Stone Cat’ mini-album, released on Heartland Records in 1997.

After reuniting in 2015, EDEN became active performers once again in the Melbourne alternative music scene. This current iteration, featuring Bowley (vocals, 6 & 12 string guitars), Andrew Kutzer (6 string guitar), and Matthew Sigley (bass guitar, drum machine, and keyboards), released ‘The Edge of Winter’ (Seraphyne Records, AU) in June 2017, launching it at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen festival in Leipzig, Germany.

Currently, EDEN consists of Sean Bowley (vocals, 6 & 12 string guitars) and Anthony Cornish (6 & 12 string guitars, keyboards, drum machine). This evolving lineup, known as EDEN-REVENANT, performs a mix of material from early EDEN releases and new compositions set for release in 2020. Throughout their career, EDEN has shared the stage with various acts both in Australia and internationally, including Rowland S. Howard, These Immortal Souls, Lycia, Love Spirals Downward, Attrition, Heligoland, Ostia, and many others. The band has undertaken promotional visits to the UK (1990) and a comprehensive tour in the USA (1996). In 2017, they performed live at the Wave-Gotik-Treffen festival in Leipzig.

Grading

Mastering Vinyl Grading for Collectors

When it comes to vinyl record collecting, understanding grading is crucial for ensuring both the longevity of your collection and the preservation of its value. You should familiarize yourself with the Goldmine grading scale, which ranges from Mint (M) to Poor (P). Each grade reflects not only the physical condition of the vinyl but also its potential sound quality. For example, a record in Near Mint (NM) condition can preserve a $100+ value, while one graded Good (G) might drop significantly in price and listening experience due to surface noise and scratches.

To properly assess a record's grade, inspect it under bright light for scratches and warps. Play it on a quality turntable to evaluate sound quality. Be meticulous; even minor imperfections can drastically affect both value and enjoyment. Additionally, always store your records vertically, away from direct sunlight and in a climate-controlled environment to maintain their condition over time.

This attention to grading not only protects your investment but also ensures you enjoy the rich sound quality that vinyl is known for, making your listening experience truly rewarding.

Pro Tip: Use a magnifying glass to detect subtle scratches that aren't visible to the naked eye; this can help you better assess a record's true grade before purchasing.

Why This Album Is Worth Thousands

Led Zeppelin by Led Zeppelin (1969)

The self-titled debut album by Led Zeppelin, released in 1969, is an iconic cornerstone of rock music and a must-have for vinyl collectors. Its collectibility stems from its groundbreaking sound and cultural impact, which laid the groundwork for heavy metal and hard rock. First pressings are particularly sought after, especially the original UK pressing on Atlantic Records featuring the classic 'plum' label. These early editions are often valued between $1,000 to $5,000, depending on condition.

Collectors are especially interested in variants like the first pressing with the misprinted matrix number, '588171' instead of '588171 A//1', which can fetch upward of $10,000. Additionally, the album’s infamous cover art features a striking image of the Hindenburg disaster, making it a conversation starter and a visual treat.

What makes these original pressings special is not just the nostalgia; it’s the rich analog sound that digital formats can’t replicate. The warmth and texture of the vinyl capture the raw energy of Led Zeppelin's legendary performances.

When hunting for this gem, look for the early 'blue and orange' Atlantic label, matrix numbers etched in the deadwax, and the textured cover. A mono version and the first press with 'ST-A-691671' matrix are extremely rare and can be valued at $25,000 or more, contingent on their condition.

Owning a first pressing of Led Zeppelin means holding a piece of rock history—an investment that resonates with both sound and story. Join the ranks of avid collectors and seek out this timeless classic today!
