Texas, often celebrated as the Lone Star State, has been the birthplace of numerous rap artists. While cities like Houston and Dallas have frequently captured national attention, emerging artist Chalie Boy is poised to shift that narrative. Hailing from the lesser-known towns of Hearne and Calvert, Texas, Chalie Boy brings a distinctive sound that diverges from the familiar chopped and screwed style typically associated with the region.
Chalie Boy cites a variety of influences, including hip-hop and R&B icons such as Nate Dogg, Big Moe from the Screwed Up Click, UGK, Scarface, Luther Vandross, and Gerald Levert. "I started singing in church when I was a kid, and my love for both R&B and hip-hop made me realize there was a niche for my style—a blend of the two genres," he explains. His musical journey began in the church choir, and while classmates wrote rap verses, Chalie focused on delivering harmonious melodies. It was not until 2000 that he expanded his repertoire to include rap, debuting on a mixtape with the local hip-hop group The Freestyle Kingz, produced by Dirty 3rd Records' DJ Bull. "I actually fused my singing with rapping," Chalie recalls. "People really responded to it, so I felt like I had a lane to move in."
Chalie Boy did more than just find his lane; he made significant strides in the industry. After signing with Dirty 3rd Records, he gained traction by performing alongside DJ Bull and The Freestyle Kingz, contributing to several popular mixtapes. Eventually, he teamed up with Freestyle Kingz member Tite to form a duo that released four successful tapes. By 2004, he embarked on a solo career, releasing his first mixtape, Makin’ My Way, which sold around 20,000 copies. The following year, Chalie Boy’s Greatest Hits compiled original tracks and mixtape records, leading to three additional volumes due to its success. His breakout moment came in 2006 with the mixtape Versatyle Child, which featured the regional hit "Bumpa Grill." The subsequent release, Return of The Versatyle Child, followed in 2007, but it was in 2009 that Chalie Boy made a significant impact on mainstream music with the summer anthem "I Look Good." The track, along with its remix featuring Slim Thug, Juvenile, and Bun B, reached the top 50 on the Billboard Hip Hop/R&B chart, leading to a signing with Battery/Jive Records in September 2009.
"Signing a major deal with a label like Jive/Battery Records is one of the highlights of my career," Chalie states. He also reflects on "I Look Good" becoming a national hit, with its accompanying video featured on MTV and BET's 106 & Park countdown for several weeks. Since 2000, Chalie has consistently performed, developing a solid fan base through hard work and determination, both from himself and his team.
In recent years, Chalie has opened for notable artists such as Young Jeezy, T.I., Slim Thug, Gorilla Zoe, and The-Dream, and has been featured on over 200 mixtapes, including 12 solo and 10 group projects. Always striving to grow as an artist, he collaborated with Grammy Award-winning rapper Chamillionaire on “Call Me,” from his I’m Here mixtape in 2009. Through his artistry and relentless effort, Chalie Boy has demonstrated that Texas is more than just a lone star state. He is now eager to share his unique brand of hip-hop with mainstream audiences through his upcoming major label debut, which remains untitled. "I want to let the world know that there is more to my artistry than just the hit single ‘I Look Good,’" he asserts. "I have had tremendous support from fans in my region for years, and now it’s time for me to showcase what I have to offer."
