BORKNAGAR is a progressive metal band hailing from Bergen, Norway, known for its innovative approach to music. Founded in 1994 by guitarist Øystein G. Brun, the band emerged from a vision of musical audacity, drawing inspiration from melodious atmospherics. To realize this vision, Brun enlisted like-minded musicians from notable bands such as Enslaved, Gorgoroth, Arcturus, Immortal, and Ulver, aiming to redefine the boundaries of traditional black metal.
The band's self-titled debut album was released in 1996 through Malicious Records. This marked the beginning of BORKNAGAR's journey, which quickly gained momentum after signing with Century Media and releasing their sophomore album, The Olden Domain, in 1997. The album received critical acclaim and resonated well with fans, leading to their participation in a European tour in 1998 alongside In Flames.
In August 1998, BORKNAGAR returned to the studio to record The Archaic Course, which introduced new members Jens F. Ryland on guitar and Simen Hestnæs, also known as I.C.S. Vortex, on vocals. Following a standout performance at the 1998 Wacken Open Air Festival, drummer Grim and bassist Kai Lie departed the band. They were replaced by drummer Justin Greaves and Vortex, who took on additional bass duties. In May 1999, BORKNAGAR, joined by former Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir drummer Nick Barker, embarked on the Kings of Terror Tour in North America alongside Emperor, Witchery, Peccatum, and Divine Empire, further solidifying their reputation.
In January 2000, BORKNAGAR entered Sweden's renowned Abyss Studios to record their fourth album, Quintessence. This album, which saw the addition of drummer Asgeir Mickelson and Solefald's keyboardist Lars A. Nedland, was recognized as one of the most creatively innovative extreme metal releases of the year and received a nomination for the Norwegian national Alarm prize. Following this, Hestnæs left to focus on Dimmu Borgir, and Vintersorg joined the band. Erik Tyr Tiwaz, known for his work with Emperor and Satyricon, contributed during this period while Nedland balanced his commitments to both bands.
In October 2001, BORKNAGAR released Empiricism, one of their best-selling albums, which garnered nominations for the National Grammy Award and the Alarm prize in Norway. By 2004, the band had completed their sixth album, EPIC, which was ambitious in scope and entered the national charts in Norway, receiving positive international feedback. In 2006, they released Origin, an entirely acoustic album that marked a return to the foundational elements of their musical style, concluding a significant chapter in their career. Additionally, Century Media Records put out a retrospective compilation titled For the Elements 1996-2006 in 2008.
With the completion of their contract with Century Media Records in 2008, BORKNAGAR signed with INDIE RECORDINGS. Ryland and Tiwaz rejoined the band, but drummer Asgeir Mickelson left due to differing musical directions. He was succeeded by David Kinkade, who became a full-time member shortly thereafter.
In 2010, BORKNAGAR released Universal, which featured I.C.S. Vortex as a guest vocalist on the track “My Domain.” The album received widespread acclaim and favorable reviews from prominent publications, including Metal Hammer, Rock Hard, and Scream Magazine. Following this release, Tiwaz departed from the band, while Vortex was reinstated as a full-time member, contributing both bass and vocals alongside Vintersorg.
In early 2011, BORKNAGAR renewed their partnership with Century Media Records by signing a three-album deal.
