BIOGRAPHY – UPDATED JULY 2012
Rachel James is an accomplished musician, songwriter, producer, remixer, sound engineer, and DJ. She has collaborated with artists such as Angie Brown, Joy Malcolm, and Steve Strange, and has produced tracks for labels including Sony Music and Neo Records. Her work has garnered recommendations from notable figures such as Danny Tenaglia, Redanka, and Eddie Gordon. A multi-genre producer and multi-instrumentalist, Rachel's diverse talents make her difficult to categorize within a single genre.
Rachel’s musical journey began at the age of five, when she started playing keyboard, violin, and guitar. By the time she was thirteen, she was already performing in her first rock band. At fifteen, she discovered her passion for dance music and began DJing, quickly moving into music production. Utilizing borrowed equipment, Rachel established a small home studio, where she began creating demos that eventually caught the attention of Grant Nelson. This led her to London, where she co-wrote a few tracks for the label Nice 'n' Ripe.
In the late 1990s, Rachel connected with Eddie Gordon from Neo Records, who assigned her remix projects that enhanced her visibility among A-list DJs and on BBC Radio 1. In 2001, her innovative mash-up of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance” with DSK’s “What Would We Do” generated significant interest, particularly with the track "Do What We Would," which gained traction among DJs in Ibiza that summer. This track was signed to Sony’s dance label INCredible and became a major club hit, topping various dance charts.
More recently, Rachel launched her own label, Axis Trax. Initially intended to showcase her own musical explorations, it quickly evolved into a platform for both emerging and established dance artists. Despite starting on a limited budget, Axis Trax attracted a substantial following and celebrated its first anniversary with a major event at Ministry of Sound in London. Over the past three years, Rachel has remixed tracks for a wide range of artists, including Jessie J, Black Eyed Peas, Marvin Gaye, Flash Brothers, X-Press 2, Redanka, Angelic, Amanda Wilson, Peyton, Graeme Park, Nightstylers, Mazie Williams, Joyce Sims, N-Joi, Pete Doyle, Freddy Bastone, Pepper Mashay, Rita Campbell, 7th Heaven, Banderas, and Awesome 3.
Currently, Rachel is working on new projects with Blue Amazon and is co-writing and producing her debut album under the moniker Avro.
