Big Al Staggs has released a new single and video titled "Been There Done That," which marks the first track from his forthcoming album, “So Lo.” This album comprises ten original compositions filled with energy, positivity, and an uplifting message that resonates with listeners. Staggs' extensive musical journey, particularly with bands like the Left Wing Fascists and Moaning Lisas, has culminated in this vibrant collection that showcases his storytelling abilities.
The lyrics of "Been There Done That" capture relatable experiences for many, enhanced by a tribal chant that accompanies Staggs' lead vocals. This chant evokes memories of unforgettable nights with friends, while the lyrics suggest that even if one believes they have experienced it all, they may find a transformative partner who reveals new possibilities.
The single and video are produced and directed by Stacy Heydon, who previously served as the lead guitarist for Iggy Pop and David Bowie. Heydon is also recognized for his work on the rock band Sheriff’s #1 Billboard Hot 100 hit "When I’m with You." The music video was filmed in San Clemente, California, and features real-life events as the crew moved from location to location, including a notable scene involving an arrest and a humorous moment with a burrito. These elements perfectly align with the theme of "Been There Done That."
Originating from Norfolk, Virginia, Big Al Staggs writes from the heart and delivers his vocals with soul. Fans are encouraged to listen to the new single, with the complete album set to be released on January 1, 2020.
The Left Wing Fascists, of which Staggs is a founding member, have celebrated 29 years of existence. The band was established in 1987 in Norfolk, Virginia, and performed their first live show at The Corner, a local hardcore club. Their debut performance can be viewed on their YouTube channel from July 1987. Staggs and Slicky Bob, who is credited with naming the band, were the original members. After Slicky Bob's departure post-July 4th party, Eric Nestor joined, and along with original bassist Markus Wegener, they spent 14 consecutive open mic nights at The Corner, leading to the creation of their first EP, All You Can Eat, recorded by Bob Smith at Earworks Recording in Virginia Beach.
Scott Carlisle from The Earatations later joined the band, along with drummer Rick Murphy from Starving Artists. The group secured a recording contract with Cellar Door Records, bringing in producer Stacy Heydon from Canada. Heydon, who produced Sheriff’s hit "When I’m with You" in 1982, collaborated with the band on their first LP, A Mother Nightmare, recorded at WinMark Recording Studios and released in 1990. The album was later reissued nationally with a remixed cover of the first track, "I Drive a Yugo," featuring drummer David Almeleh in 1991.
The Left Wing Fascists performed live throughout Virginia and embarked on tours until 1995, when Eric Nestor and Markus Wegener departed before the recording of their second LP. However, they often reunited for special performances. In 1995, Big Al Staggs and Scott Carlisle collaborated on the ALL FIRED UP LP, enlisting Rob Katherman on bass and David Almeleh and Billy Shearin on drums. This second LP, also produced by Stacy Heydon at Daily Planet Studios in Virginia Beach, saw limited success, but the band continued to perform occasionally at The Norva in Norfolk.
In 2015, Staggs and Carlisle reunited with producer Stacy Heydon for their third LP, OXYMORON, the first in two decades. This album benefited from Carlisle’s songwriting and instrumentation, with contributions from various studio musicians. The recording took place at Animal Farm Studios in Los Angeles, California, and in New Bern, North Carolina. The LP features a song co-written by Paul Johnson and includes the track "Never Coming Back," recorded in North Carolina.
As the band reflects on its history, they hope to attract attention for their new release despite the uncertain future of their collaboration. Staggs dreams of having their songs featured on Underground Garage with Little Steven, highlighting the evolution of their songwriting. All three LPs continue to receive airplay, contributing to the band's ongoing legacy.
