Volker Grabs, who is also known by the aliases "Loaded Bananas," "Electro Punk Zombie," "Sol Noir," and "Rick Maniac," was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. With over 18 years of involvement in music and club culture, he has established a diverse reputation across multiple roles within the industry. In 2006, Grabs relocated to the United States, where he has continued to live and work.

From an early age, Grabs developed a passion for electronic music, leading him to acquire his first sampler, synthesizer, and two Technics 1210 record players. This marked the beginning of his deep engagement with music, as he immersed himself in genres ranging from Disco, Breaks, Soul, and Rap—drawing inspiration from artists like LL Cool J, Grandmaster Flash, and Whodini—to Electro, Funk, and Punk, with influences from Newcleus, Mantronix, Art of Noise, and The Clash. His musical journey further evolved into Industrial and EBM, influenced by acts such as Coil, Skinny Puppy, Ministry, Front 242, and Nitzer Ebb, and eventually led him to Acid House and Techno in 1988.

Grabs began his deejay career in 1987, performing at private parties before moving on to clubs in and around Frankfurt, including the Basement, Sven Väth’s renowned Omen, U60311, and Ostparkstrasse. He also gained experience as a radio deejay for stations like Radio X in Frankfurt, alongside Ricardo Villalobos, Evosonic in Cologne, Radio Fritz in Berlin, and Radio XXL in Frankfurt.

In addition to his musical pursuits, Grabs has maintained a strong interest in the film industry. He worked at a film production company in Frankfurt, contributing as an assistant cameraman and film editor for clients such as Spiegel TV, Sony Music, Lufthansa AG, and Wella AG while producing projects in cities including Hamburg, Copenhagen, Amsterdam, and Miami. In 1992, he had the opportunity to work as an assistant art and creative director and sound designer for Portfolio Artists Network, the company of cult director Marcus Nispel in New York. During this time, he collaborated with notable figures like Nico Beyer, Alexander Davidis, David Nelson, and Marcus Nispel, producing music videos for artists such as Faith No More, Dina Carroll, Suzanne Vega, George Michael, and the B-52s, as well as working on television commercials for brands like Revlon, GAP, Coca-Cola, and 60 Minutes.

Upon returning to Germany in 1993, Grabs reconnected with Frankfurt’s vibrant Techno scene, quickly investing in new studio equipment to produce tracks. He continued to perform as a deejay in local clubs while releasing music through various projects, including Loaded Bananas, Electro Punk Zombie, and SuperSonic. His work has been featured on labels such as Avex in Japan, Superstar Records, Kontor Records, Intergroove, Logic Records, Media Records, Universal Music, and Hope Records.

Beyond his roles as a producer and deejay, Grabs contributed to the successful dance record label Logic Records, known for artists such as Snap, Dr. Alban, Joey Beltram, Sparks, and Underworld. Initially starting as a DJ promoter, he later advanced to A&R label manager for the esteemed sub-labels “Fresh Flavour” and “Save the Vinyl.” Following his tenure at Logic Records, he took on the role of manager of the Label Department at Neuton Medien Vertrieb, where he worked with various labels, including Ongaku, Klangelektronik, Kanzleramt, Bpitch Control, Torema, Raum Music, Cheap, Refill, and Axis.
