The Banda de Música, a distinguished Portuguese brass band, currently operates under the Unidade de Segurança e Honras de Estado. It serves as one of the resources available to the Ex.mo Comandante-Geral, contributing musically to state protocol activities, military ceremonies, cultural events, and public outreach for the GNR.

The band is renowned for its high level of specialization among its members and boasts an extensive and valuable repertoire, comprising over 3,000 works. This enables the Banda in Concerto to achieve a level of artistic excellence that is often hard to find in similar ensembles.

Among its numerous international achievements, the band has participated in several significant events, including the International Military Bands Competition in Badajoz in 1892; performances in Madrid, San Sebastián, and Barcelona in 1910; a tour of Brazil in 1930; and participation in NATO-TAPTO in the Netherlands in 1963, along with radio concert recordings in Paris. In 1965, it represented Portugal during the IV Centenary of the Foundation of Rio de Janeiro and performed again in Badajoz that same year. The band also took part in the 20th International Military Bands Festival in Mons, Belgium in 1980; engaged in a cultural exchange in Cáceres, Spain in 1987; contributed to a solidarity event in Cáceres and Plasência in 1988 for the Chiado disaster in Lisbon; participated in the 4th International Military Bands Festival in Modena, Italy in 1995; and attended the 5th International Police Bands Festival in Basel, Switzerland in 1996. A successful tour of Luxembourg in 1998 included performances in Differdange, Luxembourg City, and Vianden, particularly notable for a concert at the Conservatory of Luxembourg.

The band is also known for its traditional New Year concerts attended by His Excellency the President of the Republic. In 2005, it received the "Amália" award in the Classical Music category. The following year, the band was honored with the title of Honorary Member of the Order of Infante D. Henrique by His Excellency, Dr. Jorge Sampaio, the President of the Republic.

Since its inception in 1838, the Banda has been conducted by various maestros, including Jerónimo Soller (1838-1878), Jacques Murat (1878), Manuel Augusto Gaspar (1878-1901), António Gonçalves da Cunha Taborda (1901-1911), Joaquim Fernandes Fão (1911-1935), Lourenço Alves Ribeiro (1935-1959), Manuel da Silva Dionísio (1960-1973), Joaquim Alves de Amorim (1974-1982), Idílio Martins Fernandes (1982-1989), Vasco da Cruz Flamino (1989-2001), Jacinto Coito Abrantes Montezo (2001-2008), and João Afonso Cerqueira (2008-2023).

As of February 2 of this year, the current conductor of the Banda Sinfónica da GNR is Maestro Alferes Ricardo Torres.
