Matt B, a GRAMMY Award®-winning singer, songwriter, and producer, was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. In July 2014, he signed with StarBase Records Japan, marking a significant step in his career. His Japanese debut album, "LOVE & WAR," released in September 2014, quickly ascended to #1 on the iTunes R&B Charts. The album's lead single, "Plain Girl," also achieved #1 status on the same chart. "LOVE & WAR" saw physical distribution in over 1,400 TSUTAYA music stores, where it sold out in numerous locations.
Matt's follow-up album, "DIVE," released in January 2016, mirrored the success of his debut, reaching #1 on the iTunes R&B Charts within 24 hours. "DIVE" was similarly available in TSUTAYA stores, with two of its singles, “Tokyo Girl” and “My Dreams,” charting at #3 and #8, respectively, on the iTunes R&B Charts. Following his acclaim in Japan, Matt's influence expanded internationally, particularly with his single "Color Blind," which went viral in China, garnering over 158 million streams on the NetEase platform.
In March 2017, Matt signed a digital distribution deal with Priority Records. Under this label, he released a four-track EP titled "RISE" in April 2018, produced exclusively by GRAMMY®-winning producer Bryan-Michael Cox, which collectively achieved over half a million streams on Spotify. The single "Ain't Too Proud" charted at #4 in Taiwan and #67 in Japan on Apple Music, and reached #35 in Latvia on Spotify.
Matt also committed to philanthropy in the winter of 2018 by launching his annual "Holiday Cheer Tour." The inaugural tour was a success, as he performed for children in hospitals across 16 cities, donating toys and clothes, and participating in various Christmas festivals. In 2019, he partnered with Sofar Sounds for a 16-date nationwide tour across eleven U.S. cities. Following this tour, Matt made his nationwide television debut at the 2019 Magnificent Mile Lights Festival, the third largest parade in the country. To maintain his momentum, he released the EP "No Days Off" in December 2019, which received international recognition and reached #71 on the iTunes R&B chart in Taiwan. Matt described this project as a reflection of his relentless work ethic and pride in his Chicago roots. The EP also features J. Ivy, a three-time GRAMMY®-winning poet.
On March 12, 2021, Matt released his debut U.S. album, "EDEN," which debuted at #3 in the U.S. and #5 in Canada on the iTunes R&B/Soul Albums Chart. The album also made its mark on the Billboard R&B Albums Chart, landing at #39, and appeared on three additional Billboard charts: Digital Albums, Heatseekers, and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. To date, "EDEN" has accumulated over 1 million streams globally and features production from notable GRAMMY®-winning figures Bryan-Michael Cox and Tricky Stewart. The first single from the album, "Go Hard," was released in May 2020, charting at #83 on Deezer and #129 on Apple Music in Egypt and Bulgaria, respectively. The second single, "Deep," released in July 2020, garnered nearly 150,000 streams within its first month. Matt emphasized that the album aimed to tell his story in a compelling way while providing a fresh sound to R&B.
Matt B continues to carve his niche in the mainstream music scene and broaden his global reach. On March 4, 2022, he released the single "Gimme Love," the lead track from his upcoming album "ALKEBULAN." The single debuted in the top 50 on the Billboard US Afrobeats Chart, peaking at #36, and has since amassed over 5 million streams globally, earning him his first GRAMMY® nomination. "ALKEBULAN," released on August 18, 2023, debuted on the Billboard Top Current Albums chart within the Top 100 and has won over 20 awards, including Best Album at the Global Music Awards. Additionally, Matt was named 'Critically Acclaimed Artist of the Year' by the Los Angeles Tribune and recognized as one of the ‘100 Most Influential People in Entertainment 2023’ by Ranks Africa. He also received the Hollywood Music In Media Award (HMMA) for Best Music Video for "GUNJALE."
In August 2024, Matt B released "ALKEBULAN II," the second installment of the "ALKEBULAN" series, which garnered critical acclaim and earned him a second GRAMMY® nomination in the Best Global Music Album category. The lead single "NO WAHALA" won Best Song - Short Film at the HMMAs, and "ALKEBULAN II" achieved success at the 67th GRAMMY Awards® in 2025, marking Matt B's first win for a GRAMMY Award®.
