Anders Nilsson is a Swedish composer, born on July 6, 1954, in Stockholm. His musical education began with private studies from 1970 to 1971, followed by completing the upper secondary school's music program from 1971 to 1973. He then attended Birkagården Folk High School's music line from 1973 to 1975 and pursued composition at the Stockholm Academy of Music under the guidance of Professor Gunnar Bucht and others from 1979 to 1983.
Between 1970 and 1979, Nilsson was a member of the progressive rock group Östan Sol, Västan Måne and worked as a theater musician and composer at the Stockholm City Theater and Riksteatern from 1975 to 1977. His debut as a composer came in 1981 with the first part of his orchestral trilogy, Trois Pièces pour grand orchestre, presented at UNM in Copenhagen. Since then, he has created a diverse body of work, including orchestral and chamber music, as well as musical dramas. His notable compositions include several symphonies, multiple instrumental concertos, string quartets, and the opera Klassresan, for which he wrote the libretto. In 2007, his opera Zarah, with a libretto by Claes Fellbom, premiered at the Folkoperan, achieving 52 performances and an audience of over 25,000. The following year, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra featured his music during a composers' weekend. In 2013, he collaborated with Charlotte Engelkes and Sophie Holgersson on the opera Kira - i huset där jag bor.
Nilsson has also contributed articles to various publications, including the magazine Contemporary Music. His Requiem for Baritone, Choir, and Orchestra premiered in November 2010 and earned him the Music Association's Stockholm Prize in the spring of 2011, followed by the Swedish Music Publishers' Association's prize in autumn 2011. During the 2016-2017 concert season, he was recognized as the composer profile for Västerås Sinfonietta.
