Coleman Hawkins

Coleman Hawkins was an influential American jazz tenor saxophonist, born on November 21, 1904, in St. Joseph, Missouri. He passed away on May 19, 1969, in New York City. Known by the nicknames "Bean" and "Hawk," Hawkins began his musical journey with piano lessons at the age of five. He transitioned to the cello at seven and, by the age of nine, he had taken up the tenor saxophone, becoming a professional musician by the age of 12.

In August 1923, Hawkins recorded with the orchestra of Fletcher Henderson, which also included notable musician Louis Armstrong at that time. After a stint performing in Europe from 1934 to 1939, Hawkins returned to New York, where he famously recorded his renowned interpretation of "Body and Soul" almost serendipitously at the conclusion of a session for RCA Victor. Throughout his career, Hawkins primarily led his own ensembles and collaborated with various prominent artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk, and Ben Webster, among others.

Description

The Hawk Flies High is a 1957 album by jazz tenor saxophonist Coleman Hawkins. Apart from Barry Galbraith and Jo Jones on guitar and drums, the line-up of his accompanying sextet had a bebop background, namely J.J. Johnson on trombone, Idrees Sulieman on trumpet, pianist Hank Jones, and Oscar Pettiford on bass.

Here's the SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ringwear.

VG- (Very Good Minus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Many marks, somehow plays without skipping despite significant noise.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, possible large seam splits.
