Karlheinz Stockhausen

Karlheinz Stockhausen

Born on August 22, 1928, in Mödrath, Kerpen, Germany, Karlheinz Stockhausen emerged as a pivotal figure in 20th and early 21st-century music. He is recognized by critics for his significant yet often controversial contributions to the field, particularly in electronic music, aleatory (controlled chance) techniques in serial composition, and the concept of musical spatialization.

Stockhausen's formal education began at the Cologne Musikhochschule, where he studied under Swiss composer Frank Martin from 1947 to 1951. A critical turning point in his career occurred in 1951 during his encounter with Olivier Messiaen's Mode de valeurs at Darmstadt. This experience opened up new possibilities for long-range serial processes, which he subsequently explored in works such as Kreuzspiel (1951) and KontraPunkte (1952), both composed for piano-based ensembles. The latter was created during his studies with Messiaen in Paris, a time when Stockhausen also ventured into electronic music for the first time. Upon returning to Cologne, he advanced this interest, notably with Gesang der Jünglinge (1956), a pioneering piece that incorporated vocal and synthesized sounds on tape. Concurrently, he continued to explore the implications of serial instrumental music.

Stockhausen visited the United States for the first time in 1958, and during this period, his compositions began to exhibit a more relaxed character, both in terms of event density and notational precision. This shift was influenced by John Cage and the new perspectives offered by electronic music, which encouraged different listening experiences.

His impact on music extended to a generation of European composers, including notable contemporaries like Pierre Boulez and Luciano Berio. Stockhausen was also the father of six children: Suja Stockhausen-Lefranc, Christel, Markus Stockhausen, Majella Stockhausen, Julika, and Simon Stockhausen. He passed away on December 5, 2007, in Kürten, Germany.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
