The Flying Burrito Bros

The Flying Burrito Bros

The Flying Burrito Brothers emerged as a pioneering country rock band in 1968, gaining recognition primarily for their seminal debut album, *The Gilded Palace of Sin*, which was released in 1969. Often associated with country rock icons Gram Parsons and Chris Hillman—both of whom were former members of The Byrds—the band experienced numerous personnel changes throughout its history.

The original lineup included Parsons and Hillman as the main vocalists, guitarists, and songwriters, alongside Sneaky Pete Kleinow on pedal steel guitar, Chris Ethridge on bass, and a succession of drummers. Michael Clarke, another former member of The Byrds, later joined as the permanent drummer. Following the release of their first album, Ethridge was replaced by guitarist Bernie Leadon, while Hillman transitioned to bass.

After the second album, *Burrito Deluxe*, Gram Parsons was replaced as the frontman by Rick Roberts, who contributed to one studio album and a live album. Subsequently, the band began to fragment; Chris Hillman and Al Perkins—who succeeded Kleinow—formed Manassas, while Bernie Leadon went on to establish the Eagles. New members, including Byron Berline, Roger Bush, and Kenny Wertz, later formed Country Gazette. Following a European tour in 1973 with a new lineup, Rick Roberts disbanded the group and pursued a solo career, later joining Michael Clarke to form Firefall.

In the mid-1970s, original members Kleinow and Ethridge reformed the band with new musicians, including former Byrds members Gene Parsons and Skip Battin. This led to a more Nashville-oriented version of the band, led by Gib Guilbeau and John Beland, which recorded and toured throughout the 1980s under the name Burrito Brothers.

In the mid-1980s, Pete Kleinow revived the Flying Burrito Brothers name, eventually reuniting with Guilbeau and Beland. Under Beland's leadership, the band underwent various transformations, releasing albums and touring extensively during the 1980s and 1990s. Their later albums featured a notable roster of guest artists, including Merle Haggard, Buck Owens, Waylon Jennings, Alison Krauss, Ricky Skaggs, and Charles Louvin. The last two albums, *Dirt and Gold* and *The Flying Burrito Brothers*, received favorable critical attention, but Beland decided to disband the group in 2000 to focus on a career as a record producer. In the 2010s, Chris Hillman acquired the trademark for the Flying Burrito Brothers name.

Kleinow's 2000s offshoot, Burrito Deluxe, featured Carlton Moody on lead vocals and Garth Hudson from The Band on keyboards. This iteration did not achieve chart success and relied on live performances in Europe. Kleinow departed from the band due to health issues in 2005, resulting in a lack of direct connection to any past or present members of the Flying Burrito Brothers. The band continued until 2010, when it rebranded as The Burritos, and later, in 2014, as The Burrito Brothers. A group operating under the name The Burrito Brothers still tours and releases music today.

Key members of the band included Gram Parsons, Chris Hillman, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Chris Ethridge, Michael Clarke, Rick Roberts, and Bernie Leadon.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
