Jo Jo Gunne

Jo Jo Gunne

The American rock band Jo Jo Gunne was formed in Los Angeles, California, in 1971 by Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes, following their departure from the band Spirit. The group's name was inspired by a song by Chuck Berry titled "Jo Jo Gunne."

In 1972, they released their self-titled debut album, which featured the top 10 hit "Run Run Run" in the UK. After the first album, tensions arose leading to Mark Andes's departure from the band due to a disagreement with his brother Matt and Ferguson. He was succeeded by Jimmie Randall, who brought a brighter bass sound and contributed to an increase in the band's overall volume.

Following the album Jumpin' the Gunne, Matt Andes also left the group and was briefly replaced by Starr Donaldson in 1974. However, John Staehely soon took over, having previously played on Feedback, the Spirit album released after Ferguson and Andes's exit. Staehely's overdriven guitar provided a distinct shift from Matt Andes's signature Ry Cooder-style slide guitar.

The band released three more albums before disbanding in 1974. After the breakup, Ferguson embarked on a solo career, producing several albums that included hit singles such as "Thunder Island" and "Shakedown Cruise." He also went on to score music for various television shows and films. Meanwhile, Mark Andes joined Firefall and later became a member of Heart.

Drummer Curly Smith pursued a career as a session musician, contributing to Spirit in the 1980s and performing with Boston from 1994 to 2000. The original lineup of Jo Jo Gunne briefly reunited around 1992. In a July 1995 interview with Vintage Guitar Magazine, Mark Andes noted, "Curly Smith called me up and mentioned it was the twentieth anniversary of the band's formation; Steve Lukather took us into the studio, and we recorded a lot of new material, but it didn't go anywhere."

In 2005, the band began recording again at Jay Ferguson's studio in Santa Barbara. These recordings culminated in the release of the album Big Chain on Blue Hand Records, co-produced by the band and engineered by Ferguson.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
