Sylvia Robinson

American singer, songwriter, and producer Sylvia Vanterpool was born on May 29, 1935, in New York, USA, and passed away on September 29, 2011, in New Jersey, USA. She was the mother of Joey Robinson, Jr., Leland Robinson, and Rhondo Robinson.

At the age of 14, while attending Washington Irving High School, Sylvia's exceptional vocal abilities led her to her first recordings, where she performed blues music with a band led by trumpeter Hot Lips Page. From 1956 to 1962, she collaborated in a duo with her former guitar teacher, the skilled guitarist Mickey Baker. This partnership came to an end when Sylvia moved to Paris in 1962.

In 1964, Sylvia married musician Joe Robinson, Sr. and became deeply involved in the music industry, operating a club in the Bronx. The couple eventually relocated to Englewood, New Jersey, where they established [l484812], an eight-track recording studio that featured its own house band akin to the setups at Motown and Stax.

In 1968, the Robinsons founded [l286675], and Sylvia emerged as one of the few female record producers of her time. However, by the late 1970s, All Platinum faced financial challenges, exacerbated by the Robinsons' $1 million acquisition in 1975 of the Chess Records catalog, which included works by notable artists such as Chuck Berry and Muddy Waters. Although they planned to produce new recordings under the Chess label, financial constraints hindered their efforts.

In 1979, a significant opportunity arose when Sylvia's teenage son, Joey, introduced her to the new sounds emerging from the Bronx. This led to the creation of "Rapper's Delight," a track that quickly gained popularity, selling 50,000 copies daily. The single became a top 40 hit in the US and reached No. 3 in the UK. This success launched the Robinsons' label, [l=Sugar Hill Records], and positioned Sylvia as a pivotal figure in the global rise of hip-hop music.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
