Eugene Ormandy
Eugene Ormandy, a distinguished Hungarian-American conductor and violinist, was born Jenö Blau on November 18, 1899, in Budapest, Hungary. He passed away on March 12, 1985, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA, at the age of 85.
Ormandy is most renowned for his extensive tenure as the conductor of The Philadelphia Orchestra, where he cultivated what became known as the "Philadelphia Sound," characterized by rich string textures and an emphasis on legato phrasing and a rounded tone.
Ormandy exhibited musical talent from a remarkably young age; he could identify symphonies by the age of three and began playing the violin at four. By five, he was a student at the Royal Academy of Music in Budapest, now recognized as the Franz Liszt Academy of Music, where he studied under Jenő Hubay. His conducting career commenced with the Symphonisches Blüthner-Orchester Berlin.
In 1921, Ormandy emigrated to the United States, obtaining citizenship in 1927. Around this time, he adopted the name "Eugene Ormandy," with "Eugene" serving as the Hungarian equivalent of "Jenő." The origin of "Ormandy" is less clear; it may have been either his own middle name at birth or his mother's. Throughout the 1920s, Ormandy worked as a conductor in New York, making his Philadelphia debut in 1930 with The Robin Hood Dell Orchestra. His significant break came in 1931 when he was asked to substitute for the ailing Arturo Toscanini with the Philadelphia Orchestra, leading to his first major conducting appointment in Minneapolis.
From 1931 to 1936, Ormandy was the Music Director of the Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra, now known as the Minnesota Orchestra. During his tenure, RCA Victor contracted the orchestra, resulting in numerous recordings from 1934 to 1935, including premieres of works by Zoltán Kodály and Arnold Schoenberg.
In 1936, Ormandy began a remarkable 44-year association with The Philadelphia Orchestra, first serving as associate conductor under Leopold Stokowski and then becoming the permanent conductor in 1938. Known for his ability to learn scores quickly, Ormandy often conducted without a score or baton, fostering a strong rapport with the ensemble and personally hiring all 104 musicians in the orchestra.
As music director, Ormandy conducted between 100 and 180 concerts annually in Philadelphia and led the orchestra on numerous national and international tours. Notable events included a 1955 tour of Finland, where he and orchestra members visited the esteemed composer Jean Sibelius, and in 1973, they became the first American symphony orchestra to perform in the People's Republic of China. Ormandy also recorded extensively with Columbia and RCA, particularly during the stereo LP era. He retired from his conducting position in Philadelphia after the 1979-1980 season, subsequently being named Conductor Laureate.
Ormandy was a highly knowledgeable and well-prepared conductor, particularly adept at Romantic and post-Romantic repertoire, with significant acclaim for his performances and recordings of works by Richard Strauss and Sergei Rachmaninoff. He premiered numerous compositions by American composers and led the first symphonic concert broadcast on American television in 1948.
Throughout his career, Ormandy received several prestigious awards, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom from Richard M. Nixon in 1970, the Ditson Conductor's Award for his advocacy of American music in 1977, the honorary title of Knight of the British Empire conferred by Queen Elizabeth II in 1976, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 1982.
Eugene Ormandy was also the brother of Martin Ormandy.

- Record was initially cleaned manually, then ultrasonically cleaned with iSonic Ultrasonic Cleaning prior to grading
- Records are packaged with a poly outer sleeve, the LP is placed in a fresh white inner sleeve directly after cleaning, (we include the accompanying sleeve, we send you both), separate from the cover to protect the seams during shipment, and of course, shipped within thick cardboard insert pads in a thick cardboard record mailer.

SEALED/Mint:
Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.
Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.
NM (Near Mint):
Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.
EX (Excellent):
Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.
Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.
VG+ (Very Good Plus):
Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.
Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.
Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.
VG (Very Good):
Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.
Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.
G+ (Good Plus):
Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.
Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.
G (Good):
Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.
Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.
F (Fair):
Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip
Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
