OC Smith

**Soul - Jazz Singer** **Born:** June 21, 1932, Mansfield, Louisiana, U.S.A. **Died:** November 23, 2001, Los Angeles, California, U.S.A.

O.C. Smith began his music career with a December 1955 release of a cover of Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti." Although the song did not achieve commercial success, it led to a solo contract with his label, resulting in three additional releases that also failed to chart.

In 1961, Smith joined Count Basie's band as a vocalist, a role he maintained until 1965. During this time, he continued to record with various labels, yet a breakthrough hit remained out of reach. This changed in 1968 when Columbia Records, on the verge of releasing him from his contract, saw Smith enter the charts for the first time with "Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp." The song reached No. 2 on the UK Singles Chart and broke into the Top 40 in the United States. The track was later revived by Kenny Rogers as a country song in 1976.

Smith altered his name to O.C. and recorded "Little Green Apples," a song written by Bobby Russell, which climbed to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earned Russell the Grammy Award for Song of the Year in 1969. The song also received a gold record from the R.I.A.A. for selling one million copies. He continued to find success in R&B, Adult Contemporary, and pop charts with songs such as "Daddy's Little Man," "Friend, Lover, Woman, Wife," "Me and You," and "Love To Burn." In 1977, Smith returned to the UK Singles Chart with "Together," which reached the Top 30.

After his time with CBS, Smith collaborated with Charles Wallert, who wrote and produced the title track for the album "Dreams Come True." This project helped return Smith to the national charts, resulting in the album Whatcha Gonna Do, which featured three nationally charted singles over a span of 40 weeks. Notable tracks included "Brenda," "You're My First, My Last, My Everything," and "Spark Of Love." Additional hits like "The Best Out Of Me" and "After All Is Said And Done" solidified Smith’s status as a Beach Music star, leading to five awards from six nominations at the third Beach Music Awards.

In his later years, Smith became the pastor and founder of The City Of Angels Church in Los Angeles, California, where he served for 16 years. One of his final recordings, "Save The Last Dance For Me," topped the Rhythm n' Beach Top 40 chart. Following his death, Governor Jim Hodges declared June 21, 2002, as 'O.C. Smith Day' in South Carolina, and in November 2002, Smith was posthumously inducted into the Carolina Beach Music Hall of Fame.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
