Waylon Jennings

American country singer Waylon Jennings was born on June 15, 1937, in Littlefield, Texas, and passed away on February 13, 2002, in Chandler, Arizona. His musical journey began at the young age of eight when he first picked up a guitar, and by twelve, he made his performance debut on KVOW radio. This early exposure led him to form his first band, The Texas Longhorns. At sixteen, Jennings decided to leave high school to pursue a career in music, working as a performer and DJ at various radio stations, including KVOW, KDAV, KYTI, and KLLL, in Coolidge, Arizona, and Phoenix.

In 1958, Buddy Holly facilitated Jennings's first recording session and enlisted him as a bass player. Notably, Jennings made the fateful decision to give up his seat on the plane that tragically crashed in 1959, claiming the lives of Holly, J.P. "Big Bopper" Richardson, and Ritchie Valens.

Jennings later formed a rockabilly band known as The Waylors, which became the house band at JD's, a club in Scottsdale, Arizona. He recorded for Trend and several independent labels before signing with A&M Records, but it was his move to RCA Victor that marked a significant turning point in his career. His critically acclaimed album, which featured songs primarily written by Billy Joe Shaver, solidified his status in the music industry.

During the 1970s, Jennings played a key role in the emergence of outlaw country music. Alongside Willie Nelson, Tompall Glaser, and his wife Jessi Colter, he recorded country music's first platinum album. In the 1980s, he became part of the country supergroup The Highwaymen, along with Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Johnny Cash, releasing three albums between 1985 and 1995. During this period, Jennings also released the successful album, "Right for the Time."

After 1997, he reduced his touring schedule to spend more time with his family. From 1999 to 2001, his public appearances were limited due to health issues. Jennings joined another supergroup, Old Dogs, featuring Bobby Bare, Jerry Reed, and Mel Tillis, with songs predominantly written by Shel Silverstein. In 2001, he was honored with induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Posthumously, he received the Cliffie Stone Pioneer Award from the Academy of Country Music in 2007.

Jennings was married to Jessi Colter, and together they had a son, Shooter Jennings. He also had a stepdaughter, Jennifer Jennings, a stepson, Struggle Jennings, and a step-great granddaughter, Brianna Harness.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
