Neal Hefti

Neal Hefti

American jazz trumpeter, born on October 29, 1922, in Hastings, Nebraska, and passed away on October 11, 2008, in Los Angeles, California. In 1945, he married Frances Wayne, a vocalist who performed with Woody Herman.

He is best recognized for his contributions as a composer and arranger, particularly for notable bandleaders Woody Herman and Count Basie. His professional arranging career began in his teenage years with Nat Towles, and during the early 1940s, he played the trumpet with various bands, including those led by Bob Astor, Les Lieber, Charlie Barnet, Bobby Byrne, Charlie Spivak, and Horace Heidt. In 1944, he joined Woody Herman's band, where he earned acclaim for his compositions, such as "The Good Earth" and "Wild Root," as well as his arrangements of hits like "Woodchopper's Ball" and "Blowin' Up a Storm," all while continuing to perform on trumpet.

Starting in 1950, he composed numerous songs for Count Basie, including notable pieces such as "Li'l Darlin'," "Cute," "Whirly Bird," "Little Pony," and "Kid from Red Bank." He also led his own band for several years during the 1950s, but from the 1960s onward, he shifted his focus primarily to writing scores for television and film. His notable works from this era include themes for Batman, Barefoot in the Park, and The Odd Couple.

Between 1965 and 1995, he achieved chart success in the U.S. eight times and in the U.K. twice as a songwriter, with two of those instances as the performing artist. His highest-charting song came in 1966 when "Batman Theme," performed by The Marketts, reached #17 on the Billboard chart. That same year, Hefti's own version of the song reached #35 overall and #12 on the adult contemporary chart. In 1973, he co-wrote "I Knew Jesus (Before He Was a Star)" with Stanley Styne, which became a crossover hit for Glen Campbell, reaching #45 overall, #26 on adult contemporary, and #48 on the country chart.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
