Vincent Youmans

Vincent Youmans

Vincent Youmans was an American composer and Broadway producer, born on September 27, 1898, in New York, New York, and he passed away on April 5, 1946, in Denver, Colorado.

Youmans began his musical journey while serving in the U.S. Navy during World War I, where he composed songs and produced entertainment for troops. Following the war, he worked as a song-plugger for Jerome H. Remick Music Publishers and later became a rehearsal pianist for Victor Herbert’s operettas. In 1921, he collaborated with Ira Gershwin to create the score for the musical "Two Little Girls in Blue," which featured the hit song "Oh Me! Oh My!" This success was followed by two other notable musicals: "Wildflower" (1923), co-written with Otto Harbach and Oscar Hammerstein II, and the highly successful "No, No Nanette" (1925), in collaboration with Irving Caesar. From "No, No Nanette," two songs, "Tea for Two" and "I Want to Be Happy," achieved international acclaim.

In 1927, Youmans shifted his focus to producing his own Broadway shows. His first production, "Hit The Deck!", garnered significant commercial success, featuring popular songs like "Sometimes I'm Happy" and "Hallelujah." However, subsequent productions did not fare as well at the box office, although some songs, such as "Time On My Hands" from "Smiles" (1930), became hits.

Youmans' last major success came with the Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers film "Flying Down To Rio," which included the hit title song and "The Carioca." Unfortunately, in 1934, he was compelled to retire due to a tuberculosis diagnosis. He made an attempt at a Broadway comeback in 1943 with "Vincent Youmans' Ballet Revue," but it did not achieve success. Ultimately, he succumbed to his illness three years later.

Despite a relatively brief career, Youmans composed fewer than 100 songs, yet 18 of these are recognized as standards by ASCAP, highlighting his significant impact on American music. In honor of his contributions, he was posthumously inducted into the Songwriter's Hall of Fame in 1970. The 1971 Broadway revival of "No, No Nanette" spurred a wave of nostalgic revivals, and in 1983, Youmans was also inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
