Black Sabbath

Black Sabbath

Regarded by many as the pioneering heavy metal band, Black Sabbath was established in 1968 in Birmingham, UK, by Tony Iommi, Ozzy Osbourne, Geezer Butler, and Bill Ward. Initially named the Polka Tulk Blues Band (later shortened to Polka Tulk), the group eventually adopted the name Earth before finally settling on Black Sabbath, inspired by an Italian horror film of the same title.

The original lineup remained intact until 1979, when Osbourne was dismissed and succeeded by Ronnie James Dio. The band underwent several lineup changes thereafter, with no configuration remaining consistent for consecutive studio albums. Throughout these transitions, only Tony Iommi and keyboardist Geoff Nicholls—who joined in 1979 but was not always recognized as a full member—stayed with Black Sabbath. In 1997, Iommi, Butler, Ward, and Osbourne reunited for a tour and released a live album in 1998, although a planned studio album did not materialize despite attempts to record with producer Rick Rubin in 2001. The band intermittently reunited for tours, including appearances at Ozzy's "Ozzfest." In 2004, Nicholls was replaced by Adam Wakeman for an Ozzfest tour, with no explanation given for the change. The original lineup was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2006.

In 2007, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, Ronnie James Dio, and drummer Vinny Appice, who had participated in the albums "Mob Rules" (1981) and "Dehumanizer" (1992), announced plans to tour together as Heaven & Hell. Iommi, who retained the Black Sabbath name exclusively for the original lineup due to their Hall of Fame induction, supported a Dio-era greatest hits release that included three new compositions by Dio and Iommi. A live album was released under the Heaven & Hell name that same year, followed by a studio album in 2009.

In 2009, Osbourne filed a lawsuit against Iommi regarding control of the Black Sabbath name, which was settled the following year. In late 2011, it was revealed that the original lineup would reunite to record and tour. However, shortly thereafter, Bill Ward withdrew, citing an "unsignable" contract. The remaining members chose to proceed without him. In 2013, the band released "13," marking their first studio album with Osbourne in 34 years. They continued to tour until 2017.

The original members came together for their final live performance in Birmingham, UK, on July 5, 2025. John 'Ozzy' Osbourne passed away on July 22, 2025, at the age of 76.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
