Nino Rota

Nino Rota

Nino Rota was an influential Italian composer born on December 3, 1911, in Milan, Italy, and he passed away on April 10, 1979, in Rome, Italy.

Hailing from a musical family, Rota studied at the Milan Conservatory under the tutelage of Ildebrando Pizzetti. His early works include the oratorio "L'infanzia di San Giovanni Battista," which debuted in both Milan and Paris in 1923, and the lyrical comedy "Il Principe Porcaro," composed in 1926.

In 1930, under the encouragement of conductor Arturo Toscanini, Rota relocated to the United States, where he stayed until 1932. He earned a scholarship to the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia, studying orchestration with Fritz Reiner and composition with Rosario Scalero. After returning to Milan, he completed a thesis on the Renaissance composer Gioseffo Zarlino.

Rota also pursued a degree in literature from the University of Milan, and in 1937, he began a teaching career that culminated in his appointment as director of the Bari Conservatory, a position he held from 1950 until his passing in 1979. During the 1940s, he composed scores for over 32 films, including Renato Castellani's "Zazà" (1944). His notable collaboration with filmmaker Federico Fellini began with "Lo sceicco bianco" (1952) and continued with "I vitelloni" (1953) and "La strada" (1954).

Rota and Fellini maintained a productive partnership for many years, with Fellini describing Rota as 'the most precious collaborator I have ever had.' He noted the profound harmony between them, highlighting Rota's unique musical imagination that transcended visual imagery. Rota's score for Fellini's "8½" (1963) is frequently recognized for enhancing the film's coherence. Additionally, his score for "Juliet of the Spirits" (1965) featured a collaboration with Eugene Walter on the song "Go Milk The Moon," which was ultimately cut from the film, and the duo also crafted the song "What Is A Youth?" for Franco Zeffirelli's "Romeo and Juliet."

In total, Rota composed scores for more than 150 films, along with several concerti, orchestral works, and pieces for piano, chamber ensembles, and choirs.

Following his death, Rota's music was honored in the 1981 tribute album "Amarcord Nino Rota." His compositions were also featured in Gus Van Sant's 2007 film "Paranoid Park." Among his notable works is the 1977 opera "The Italian Straw Hat," an adaptation of Eugène Labiche's play, which was presented by the Santa Fe Opera.

In 2005, his opera "Aladino e la lampada magica" ("Aladdin And The Magical Lamp") was performed in a German translation at the Vienna State Opera, featuring Cosmin Ifrim in the title role, and was subsequently released on DVD. Rota's short opera "I due timidi" ("The Two Timid Ones"), originally written for a RAI radio production in 1950, was part of the Santa Fe Opera's pre-season "One-Hour Opera" program in May-June 2008.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
