Earl Hines And His Orchestra

Earl Hines And His Orchestra

The Big Band, founded by Earl Hines in 1928, initially served as a rehearsal ensemble while he was performing with Jimmie Noone's Apex Club Orchestra. The group sought to merge the vibrant Hot Chicago sound with the structured format of a twelve-piece orchestral big band. Over time, the band employed various arrangers and typically featured 15 to 20 musicians on stage, occasionally expanding to as many as 28.

Among the notable members of the band were Wallace Bishop, Alvin Burroughs, Scoops Carry, Oliver Coleman, Bob Crowder, Thomas Crump, George Dixon, Julian Draper, Streamline Ewing, Ed Fant, Milton Fletcher, Walter Fuller, Dizzy Gillespie, Leroy Harris, Woogy Harris, Darnell Howard, Cecil Irwin, Harry 'Pee Wee' Jackson, Warren Jefferson, Budd Johnson, Jimmy Mundy, Ray Nance, Charlie Parker, Willie Randall, Omer Simeon, Cliff Smalls, Leon Washington, Freddie Webster, Quinn Wilson, and Trummy Young. Hines occasionally invited other pianists to serve as "relief" players, allowing him to conduct the ensemble more effectively. Notable pianists who filled in included Jess Stacy, Nat "King" Cole, and Teddy Wilson, with Cliff Smalls being Hines' preferred choice.

In 1928, Hines and his orchestra debuted at Chicago's Grand Terrace Cafe, where they broadcast live for many years, attracting a substantial national audience. In 1931, Hines and his Orchestra became the first major African American band to tour extensively through the South, an experience Hines described as an "invasion" rather than a simple tour. The journey was fraught with difficulties, including a bomb explosion beneath their bandstand in Alabama, which left them shaken but unharmed. Hines later remarked on the harrowing nature of the experience, recalling, "You could call us the first Freedom Riders," as interactions with white individuals, including fans, were often seen as perilous, complicating their search for food and accommodations.

Hines led his big band for two decades, continuing until the decline of big swing bands in the postwar era. During World War II, the Hines band became a hub of experimentation and innovation in jazz, featuring prominent figures like Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Benny Carter, Wardell Gray, and Gene Ammons. Renowned singers Billy Eckstine and Sarah Vaughan were also part of the ensemble, while Budd Johnson updated Hines' arrangements to incorporate the evolving musical language of Parker and Gillespie. In the 1950s, Hines returned to collaborate with Louis Armstrong in his All-Stars band, eventually settling in the Bay Area, where he formed his own Dixieland band.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
