Janis Joplin

**Born:** January 19, 1943, Port Arthur, Texas, USA **Died:** October 4, 1970, Los Angeles, California, USA

Janis Joplin was the eldest of her siblings and attended Thomas Jefferson High School, where she discovered her passion for painting and developed an interest in blues music. Influenced by artists such as Bessie Smith, Leadbelly, Big Mama Thornton, and Odetta, she often connected with other rebellious youth in her neighborhood. After graduating high school in 1960, Joplin pursued university studies but left in 1962, prompting the student newspaper to run the headline, "She Dares To Be Different."

In 1963, she moved to San Francisco, initially residing in North Beach before relocating to Haight-Ashbury. This period marked the beginning of her struggles with drugs and alcohol, which would ultimately lead to her untimely death. During this time, she recorded a session with Jorma Kaukonen, which later surfaced as the bootleg "The Typewriter Tape." Noticing the toll of her addictions, Joplin returned to Port Arthur in May 1965, where she took time to recuperate and enrolled as a sociology major at Lamar University.

In 1966, encouraged by Chet Helms, a friend from her teenage years, Joplin moved back to California and joined Big Brother & The Holding Company as their lead singer in June. She made her public debut with the band at the Avalon Ballroom in San Francisco. The group signed with Mainstream Records in August 1966 and recorded an album, which was delayed for release until a year later. During this time, they moved to Lagunitas, California, sharing a house with the Grateful Dead, where Joplin fell back into heavy drug use.

In November 1967, Joplin and the band signed with Albert Grossman and released their album in 1968. This was a significant year for Joplin, during which she captivated audiences at the Monterey Pop Festival, performed at the Anderson Theater in New York, participated in the Wake for Martin Luther King Jr. concert alongside Jimi Hendrix, and appeared on the Dick Cavett Show. Following a performance at a Family Dog benefit in December 1968, Joplin left the band to form the Kozmic Blues Band, releasing an album in September 1969. However, the group disbanded three months later as she continued to struggle with her addictions.

After spending time in Brazil with her close friend Linda Gravenites—who had been her costume designer and was praised by Joplin in the May 1968 issue of Vogue—Joplin returned to the United States and formed the Full Tilt Boogie Band, which began touring in May 1970. During this time, she also participated in reunion concerts with Big Brother & The Holding Company. In September 1970, she entered the studio to record a new album with producer Paul A. Rothchild.

On October 3, 1970, Joplin had already completed several takes at Sunset Recording Studios in Los Angeles, including "Mercedes Benz." However, she failed to appear for a recording session the following day. John Cooke, the road manager of the Full Tilt Boogie Band, went to the Landmark Motor Hotel, where Joplin was staying, and discovered her unresponsive on the floor of her room, having succumbed to a seizure caused by a heroin overdose.

Joplin was cremated, and her ashes were scattered over the Pacific Ocean from a plane. Her unfinished recordings were later compiled and released posthumously as the album, which became her best-selling work in 1971. In recognition of her contributions to music, she was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 as a performer.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
