Sting

Sting, born Gordon Sumner on 2 October 1951 in Wallsend, Tyne and Wear, North East England, is a multifaceted British musician, singer, songwriter, composer, bassist, actor, author, and activist. In 1977, he relocated to London, where he co-founded the band The Police with Stewart Copeland and Andy Summers. The Police produced five studio albums, garnered six Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, and were inducted into The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

One of Sting's early musical endeavors was with The Phoenix Jazzmen. His nickname "Sting" originated from a black and yellow hooped jersey he wore during a performance, which bandleader Gordon Solomon commented made him resemble a bumblebee. Although he predominantly uses the name Sting in his career, he still retains Gordon Sumner for official documents. At a press conference, he humorously remarked that even his children refer to him as Sting.

In 1988, Sting established the label Pangaea Records. As a prominent solo artist, he has achieved an additional 11 Grammy Awards, two Brit Awards, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, and four Oscar nominations, including one for “The Empty Chair” from JIM: The James Foley Story. His accolades also include a Tony nomination, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and the MusiCares Person of the Year in 2004. In 2002, he received the Ivor Novello Award for Lifetime Achievement from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors, and was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2003, Sting was honored with a CBE by Elizabeth II at Buckingham Palace for his contributions to music. He received the Kennedy Center Honors in December 2014 and most recently was awarded The American Music Award of Merit. Over his extensive career, Sting has sold nearly 100 million albums, encompassing both his work with The Police and his solo projects.

Sting is also known for his commitment to human rights, actively supporting organizations such as the Rainforest Fund, Amnesty International, and Live Aid. In 1989, he and his wife, Trudie Styler, founded the Rainforest Fund to protect the world’s rainforests and the indigenous peoples residing there. Together, they have organized 17 benefit concerts to raise awareness and funds for environmental causes.

In 2017, he received the Polar Music Prize. At the BMI Pop Awards in 2019, Sting was recognized for his enduring hit single “Every Breath You Take,” which has become the most performed song in BMI’s catalog, with 15 million radio plays. In May 2023, he was honored as an Ivor Novello Fellow.

Sting's personal life includes a marriage to Northern Irish actress Frances Tomelty on 1 May 1976, with whom he had two children, Joseph (born 23 November 1976) and Fuchsia Katherine (born 17 April 1982), before their divorce in 1984. Following his separation from Tomelty, he began a relationship with actress and film producer Trudie Styler. The couple married at Camden Register Office on 20 August 1992 and have four children: Brigitte Michael ("Mickey", born 19 January 1984), Jake (born 24 May 1985), Eliot Pauline ("Coco", born 30 July 1990), and Giacomo Luke (born 17 December 1995).

Before his rise to fame, Sting worked various jobs, including as a labourer, tax officer, bus conductor, and teacher.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
