Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis

Wynton Marsalis is an esteemed American trumpeter, composer, bandleader, music educator, and the Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. He was born on October 18, 1961, in New Orleans, Louisiana, and is part of a notable musical family—he is the brother of Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis, and Jason Marsalis, and the son of jazz pianist Ellis Marsalis. Wynton has a son, known as Wynton Marsalis III, with actress Victoria Rowell.

Throughout his career, Marsalis has been dedicated to fostering the appreciation of both classical and jazz music, particularly among younger audiences. He has received nine Grammy Awards across both genres, making him a unique figure in the music industry. Notably, a jazz recording of his became the first of its kind to be awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Music. In 1983 and 1984, he made history by being the only artist to win Grammy Awards for both jazz and classical records, and he remains the only artist to have won Grammy Awards for five consecutive years from 1983 to 1987.

Growing up in New Orleans, Marsalis showed musical talent early on as the second of six sons in the Marsalis family. At the age of eight, he performed traditional New Orleans music in the Fairview Baptist Church band under the direction of banjoist Danny Barker. By 14, he was already playing with the New Orleans Philharmonic. During his high school years, he showcased his skills with the New Orleans Symphony Brass Quintet, the New Orleans Community Concert Band, the New Orleans Youth Orchestra, and various jazz ensembles, as well as with a local funk band called the Creators.

At just 17, Wynton became the youngest musician ever admitted to Tanglewood's Berkshire Music Center, where he earned the Harvey Shapiro Award for outstanding brass student. He moved to New York City in 1979 to study at Juilliard and began taking gigs around the city. In 1980, he joined the legendary Jazz Messengers, led by Art Blakey. Over the subsequent years, Marsalis collaborated with numerous jazz icons, including Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Sweets Edison, Clark Terry, Sonny Rollins, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, and Tony Williams.

In 1987, Marsalis co-founded a jazz program at Lincoln Center. By July 1996, Jazz at Lincoln Center became a new constituent of Lincoln Center. Marsalis further advanced the institution in October 2004 when he inaugurated Frederick P. Rose Hall, the first venue dedicated to jazz that includes three performance spaces, one of which is the first concert hall designed specifically for jazz, along with facilities for recording, broadcasting, rehearsing, and education. He continues to serve as the Artistic Director for Jazz at Lincoln Center and as the Music Director for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
