Pat Metheny

Pat Metheny was born on August 12, 1954, in Lee's Summit, Missouri, into a family with a rich musical background. He began his musical journey on the trumpet at the age of 8, transitioning to the guitar by age 12. By 15, Metheny was already collaborating regularly with some of Kansas City's top jazz musicians, gaining invaluable experience in live performance at a remarkably young age. He made his international debut in the jazz scene in 1974. During his three-year collaboration with vibraphonist Gary Burton, Metheny showcased his distinctive playing style, which combined the fluid articulation typically associated with horn players with an advanced approach to rhythm and harmony. This innovative method of playing and improvisation was both modern in its conception and deeply rooted in the jazz traditions of melody, swing, and the blues. His first album, *Bright Size Life* (1975), marked a pivotal moment in the evolution of the “jazz guitar” sound for a new generation of musicians. Throughout his career, Metheny has continuously redefined the genre, exploring new technologies and striving to expand the improvisational and sonic capabilities of the guitar.

Over the years, he has collaborated with a diverse array of artists, including Steve Reich, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Hancock, Jim Hall, Milton Nascimento, Joni Mitchell, and David Bowie, among others.

Metheny is also the younger brother of trumpet and flugelhorn player Mike Metheny.

He has received twenty Grammy Awards throughout his career, including accolades for Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Best Instrumental Composition, Best Contemporary Jazz Performance, and Best Jazz Instrumental Album. His Grammy-winning works include: - Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental for *Pat Metheny Group* (Album ID: 54828) - Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental for *Imaginary Day* (Album ID: 54813) - Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental for *Still Life (Talking)* (Album ID: 54844) - Best Jazz Fusion Performance, Vocal or Instrumental for *The Way Up* (Album ID: 54870) - Best Jazz Fusion Performance for *Letter from Home* (Album ID: 54876) - Best Instrumental Composition for "Change of Heart" from *First Circle* (Album ID: 230899) - Best Contemporary Jazz Performance (Instrumental) for *Speaking of Now* (Album ID: 53902) - Best Contemporary Jazz Performance (Instrumental) for *The Way Up* (Album ID: 378990) - Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for *Imaginary Day* (Album ID: 169774) - Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group for *Bright Size Life* (Album ID: 52876) - Best Contemporary Jazz Performance for *One Quiet Night* (Album ID: 240843) - Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "The Roots of Coincidence" from *Speaking of Now* (Album ID: 240843) - Best Jazz Instrumental Performance, Individual or Group for *The Way Up* (Album ID: 154436) - Best Jazz Instrumental Solo for "(Go) Get It" from *What's It All About* (Album ID: 618893) - Best Contemporary Jazz Album for *Speaking of Now* (Album ID: 381286) - Best New Age Album for *The Way Up* (Album ID: 230901) - Best Contemporary Jazz Album for *The Road to You* (Album ID: 366834) - Best Jazz Instrumental Album, Individual or Group for *The Way Up* (Album ID: 10211) - Best New Age Album for *New Chautauqua* (Album ID: 353127) - Best Jazz Instrumental Album for *What's It All About* (Album ID: 469386).

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

International Buyers: We charge $7 for the first record and $2 a record thereafter for Domestic Shipping in the continental United States. This only includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
