Patti Drew

American soul singer and songwriter, known for her modest chart success in the late 1960s with [l654], was born on December 29, 1944, in Charleston, South Carolina, and passed away on June 18, 2025.

She spent her formative years in Nashville, Tennessee, before relocating with her family to Evanston, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago. During her teenage years, she attended Evanston High School and sang alongside her mother and sisters in their church choir. Her mother, a domestic worker, had an employer named Maury Lathowers, who was a regional promoter for [l654]. Impressed by the vocal talent of her daughters, she invited Lathowers to their church to listen to them sing. Subsequently, he invited the family to his home for an audition, which led to the group obtaining a recording contract with Capitol Records, performing as .

Their first recording was "Tell Him," a song written by Carlton Black (distinct from by The Exciters). This single achieved local success and reached the lower regions of the national charts. In 1966, Drew signed as a solo artist with [l=Quill Records] and later transitioned to , where she released a new version of "Tell Him" as her debut single. This track marked the beginning of her solo career, leading to three charting singles. Over her career, she released three albums before stepping away from the music industry in 1971. She made a return in 1975 with a release under Carl Davis and E. Rodney Jones' label, [l70731]. In the 1980s, she reunited with Carlton Black to form the group Front Line, performing in the Evanston area, marking a resurgence in her musical endeavors.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Many marks, somehow plays without skipping despite significant noise.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, possible large seam splits.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious marks, probably has a skip or jump but no guarantees.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album

This includes shipping to the International hub here in the United States. Please carefully review the total shipping and VAT charges for your order before committing to a purchase, which will be different from what we are able to view or control on the US eBay site.
