Miles Davis

**Miles Davis** *Trumpeter, bandleader, and composer* *Born May 26, 1926, in Alton, Illinois, USA; died September 28, 1991, in Santa Monica, California, USA (aged 65)*

Miles Davis is regarded as one of the most significant figures in the history of jazz. Throughout his five-decade career, he navigated various musical directions, remaining at the forefront of major stylistic developments within the genre. His album, *Kind of Blue* (1959), holds the distinction of being the highest-selling jazz album of all time, with over five million copies sold.

Davis moved to New York City to study at the Juilliard School. He made his professional debut playing with the Charlie Parker Quintet from 1944 to 1948. In 1948, he began forming his own ensembles and during this period, he met composer Gil Evans, who contributed significantly to Davis's scores and arrangements. The collaborations they recorded between 1949 and 1950 were later compiled into the LP *Miles Ahead* (1957), and Davis and Evans continued to work together on various projects starting in 1957.

A key player in the development of the 'Hard Bop' style in the mid-1950s, Davis's first regular quintet included notable musicians such as John Coltrane. In the late 1960s, he innovatively integrated electronic instruments and incorporated rock and funk rhythms into his music. After facing health and personal challenges around 1975, he took a hiatus from performing, returning to the scene in 1980.

Davis's personal life included several marriages: he wed dancer and actress Frances Taylor on December 12, 1959, but they divorced in 1968. He then married singer Betty Davis in September 1968; this marriage also ended in divorce in 1970. On November 26, 1981, he married actress Cicely Tyson, but they divorced in 1989. He was the father of two children, including actress Cheryl Davis, and the uncle of musician Miles Davis Jr.

In recognition of his contributions to music, Davis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a Performer in 2006. Over his career, he received eight Grammy Awards, including honors for Best Jazz Composition for *Sketches of Spain*, Best Jazz Performance for *Porgy and Bess*, and Best Large Jazz Ensemble Performance for *Miles Ahead*.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
