The Charlie Daniels Band

The Charlie Daniels Band

The Charlie Daniels Band was established in 1970, featuring Charlie Daniels alongside Barry Barnes on guitar, Mark Fitzgerald on bass, Fred Edwards and Gary Allen on drums, and Taz DiGregorio on keyboards. The band began their journey by recording southern rock albums for Kama Sutra Records. Although Daniels was a multi-instrumentalist, his vocal abilities were somewhat limited; however, his style was a perfect fit for the talking-style track "Uneasy Rider," which climbed into the US Top 10 in 1973. This success was followed by the release of "The South's Gonna Do It," an anthem for the southern rock genre.

In 1974, Daniels invited members of The Marshall Tucker Band and The Allman Brothers Band to perform with him onstage in Nashville, a collaboration that proved so popular that it inspired him to create the Volunteer Jam, an annual event that showcased unexpected artist pairings, including James Brown performing alongside Roy Acuff, and Crystal Gayle singing the blues with the Charlie Daniels Band.

By the time of the 1975 release of Nightrider, the band's lineup had changed, with Tom Crain, Charlie Hayward, and Don Murray replacing Barnes, Fitzgerald, and Allen, respectively. After signing with Epic Records in 1976, Daniels aimed to elevate the band into a major concert attraction, despite his imposing stature of 6 feet 4 inches and 20 stone, often obscured by an oversized cowboy hat. Their albums achieved commercial success, and in 1979, while working on Million Mile Reflections, Daniels drew inspiration from Stephen Vincent Benet's poem "The Mountain Whippoorwill." This led to the creation of "The Devil Went Down To Georgia," a tale of Johnny outsmarting the Devil to win a gold fiddle. Daniels meticulously overdubbed his fiddle seven times to enhance the recording, which ultimately topped the US country charts and reached number 3 on the US pop charts, in addition to achieving UK Top 20 status.

In 1980, the band recorded "In America," a tribute to the Iran hostages, followed by "Still In Saigon" in 1982, reflecting on Vietnam. They contributed to the soundtrack of Urban Cowboy and recorded the theme for the Burt Reynolds film Stroker Ace. The 13th Volunteer Jam took place in 1987, but due to financial and scheduling challenges, the event was temporarily paused, resuming four years later. During the late 1980s, Daniels made an appearance in the film Lone Star Kid and published a collection of short stories while continuing to tour and share his southern boogie music with devoted fans.

Throughout the 1990s, Daniels collaborated with Johnny Cash to update "The Devil Went Down To Georgia" and maintained his politically incorrect stance on various issues, often expressing controversial views. In 1993, he signed a new recording contract with Liberty Records while also reaching out to the white gospel audience through a partnership with Sparrow Records. His albums, The Door and Steel Witness, garnered several accolades from the Christian music community. In 1997, Daniels launched his own label, Blue Hat Records, and released his first children's album, By The Light Of The Moon: Campfire Songs & Cowboy Tunes, under the Sony Wonder imprint. Two years later, he took the Volunteer Jam on the road for the first time.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
