Ultravox

Ultravox, originally known as Ultravox!, is a British new wave band that originated in London in 1973 under the name Tiger Lily. From 1980 to 1986, the group achieved significant commercial success, securing seven Top Ten albums and seventeen Top 40 singles in the UK, with their most notable hit being the 1981 classic "Vienna."

The band's first three albums featured the distinct vocals of John Foxx, whose real name is Dennis Leigh. The rest of the lineup during this period included Billy Currie, Warren Cann, and Chris Cross, with Stevie Shears on guitar for the first two albums. Robin Simon replaced Shears for the third album, "Systems of Romance," during which the band dropped the exclamation mark from their name.

In 1979, following an American tour, John Foxx departed to explore solo opportunities, and Robin Simon left as well. Currie, Cross, and Cann subsequently welcomed Midge Ure as the new vocalist and guitarist, forming the most recognized and successful 'classic' 80s lineup. This iteration of the band recorded ten Top Twenty singles and seven Top Twenty albums, featuring hit singles like "Vienna," "Hymn," and "Dancing With Tears In My Eyes."

In May 1986, prior to the release of the poorly received album U-Vox, Warren Cann was asked to leave the band due to "irreconcilable differences." Following his departure, the band enlisted a session drummer but disbanded shortly after the album's release.

In the early 1990s, Billy Currie initiated a new version of Ultravox, collaborating with different singer/songwriters for each album. This lineup found popularity in mainland Europe but also dissolved by the mid-1990s.

The classic lineup reunited in late 2008, embarking on a UK tour in 2009, which was recorded and released as Return To Eden. This revival sparked renewed interest in the band, leading to the release of the album Brilliant in 2012 and a major headline tour. They served as special guests on a tour for Simple Minds in 2013, but ultimately, the band disbanded for good after that.

SRO Records Record Grading Guide:

SEALED/Mint:

Vinyl: Assumed mint, unverified until opened.

Sleeve: Visible through shrink wrap, graded as above.

NM (Near Mint):

Vinyl: Nearly flawless, with possible minor scuffs or hairlines only visible under strong light.
Sleeve: Appears new, as if freshly printed.

EX (Excellent):

Vinyl: Bright, with minor surface wear and hairlines, not affecting play.

Sleeve: May have faint creases or abrasions, but artwork is clean.

VG+ (Very Good Plus):

Vinyl: Obvious wear, scuffs and hairlines, plays with some noise but no major sound issues.

Sleeve: Worn with creases, noticeable wear, acid deterioration, corner dings, chipping, and possible seam wear.

Here's the typical SRO Records line in the sand. Anything below VG+, unless it's rare, unusual or just awesome, we're NOT going to sell online, much less go through the hassle of an ultrasonic cleaning, we're going to put it in one of many $10 Record boxes that we sell at Record Conventions and events. Some will wind up in the $1 Box, just to get it back out into the world for someone to enjoy or make a planter out of.

VG (Very Good):

Vinyl: Dull appearance with many hairlines and scuffs, somehow plays with persistent noise but no skips.

Sleeve: Worn with possible seam splits and moderate ring wear.

G+ (Good Plus):

Vinyl: Numerous marks and scratches, plays with significant noise but music usually overpowers flaws.

Sleeve: Rough appearance with possible seam splits and water damage.

G (Good):

Vinyl: Copious unforgettable marks, probably a skip or jump.

Sleeve: Heavy ring wear and damage, likely large seam splits or water damage.

F (Fair):

Vinyl: It's round with nearly infinite damage, skipper gonna skip

Sleeve: It's basically what's left of the sleeve for the album
